If you are craving company, or someone to talk to; if you feel trapped in your home with nowhere to go and nothing to do, there is an answer - The Original Open Market. On the first and third Sunday morning of each month, there is a social event taking place on the Open Market Reserve, Beach Road, Christies Beach that will cost you not one cent to attend. It is absolutely free. People of all ages and from different walks of life and backgrounds, stroll around the market. Many people, both male and female, find that it gives them the social life their present existence lacks. Lasting friendships are made as people recognize familiar faces in the crowd and strike up conversations. Those hardworking carers, who need a short break from looking after loved ones, can take a breath of fresh air at the market while they recharge their batteries. If the loved one accompanies them, the reserve is wheelchair friendly, although a little bumpy in places, but that little hiccup is on the agenda for a remedy. So popular and well known is the market, that on at least two occasions, people who have become lost because they were suffering some memory disorder, have made it to the market for help. They knew the market was there and that they would find someone to help them. They did not have to wander around the streets in the hope of someone finding them, or they themselves eventually recognizing something to put them on the track to home. The positive atmosphere of the market had brought them to a safe place for help. Even if they had not recognized what they were doing, the undeniably friendly atmosphere of the market which they had experienced whilst they were well, had made a positive impact on their instincts. Some people live for the market. A number have informed the committee, that they would have no social contact at all if they were denied the chance of attending the market twice a month. Everyone is friendly. Come and join us. You will enjoy yourself and you could make some new friends.
