Congratulations on taking the plunge and starting up in your own first home.

It is a very exciting time, and a big step, but it can be quite expensive if you let it.

It does not have to cost an arm and a leg you know, there are ways to minimize the costs.

Everyone wants the best, but is it really worth getting into so much debt just to get it, when in a few years, just by starting out with second-hand, you will be able to afford what you want.

At the Original Open Market you will be able to furnish your entire home, if you are willing to use second-hand gear for a while,  for the cost of a single room, or even less.

The market is there to help you.

Your home contents do not have to cost the earth.

Let us take a running tour of the home.

  • New carpets can be very expensive, even for a one room unit, but at the market you can buy enough to cover your floors for just a few dollars. Carpet squares are also available at times, at a very low cost.

  • Then there are the curtains and blinds.  Of course if you are renting, you will not need these items, but if you are buying your home, you can save yourself a packet.

  • Now to the furniture and even renters need these items.

  • Cupboards, wardrobes, lounges, arm chairs, stools, and coffee tables are a steal.

  • The larger bedroom furniture may not be available every market, but they eventually turn up on a stall.  Keep looking and asking.

  • Someone may have the furniture at home but not the transport to take it to the market.

  • Into the kitchen

  •  Kitchen furniture can be found as well as white goods.

  • Your kitchen cupboards can soon be filled with pots,  pans, cutlery and crockery.

  • Then you will want a clock on the shelf.

  • Linen is no problem.

How about a heater to help you through the cold nights, whilst you watch the market telly, or even a fan for those hot summer nights.

Or you could listen to the "market" radio or CD player while you read one of the books you purchased.

    Garden

  • Poor old dad will probably have to mow the lawn, but maybe not.

  • It could be a job for Super Mum or even one of those young pocket money entrepreneurs.

  • A lawn mower, whipper-snipper and hedge cutter can help make light work of the garden.

  • Spades, forks, rakes and trowels are there too,

  •  Also those fantastic garden ornaments other people have cemented in their front garden.

  •  Guarantee

  • A word of caution regarding electrical or mechanical purchases.

  • If you buy anything electrical or mechanized, please be sure to get a guarantee from the stallholder that the item works.

  •  If possible, take the item home to test it whilst the market is still open.

  • This way, if you find the item does not work, you can take it back immediately, which is always better than waiting for the next market.

  • The committee cannot take responsibility for any transaction made at the market, but all stallholders are required to do the right thing by their customers.

  •  The Original Open Market Inc. has built a reputation for honesty and goodwill and the committee jealously guards that status.

One day you will have enough money set aside to buy your dream and when you do, you will be able to look back and thank the market for helping you through those hard early times.
